Designed as a concept for a future art and educational trail across the coastal town of Worthing, the project combines creativity, craftsmanship, and community engagement. It can be a tourist attraction, an educator of all things sea related, a catalyst for linking local businesses, environmental organisations, locals, students and artists but ultimately to create a trail… if the feedback is positive on the first Seahorse.
Like the snails in Brighton, elephants in Reading, owls in Arundel… seahorses in Worthing. I want to work with our local schools, colleges, students and teachers. To tap into that local talent and give them in return, a live project that is viewed by many. After speaking with Dan Jenkins, Course Leader/BA Hons Prop making and SFX https://propsuk.com/ at Northbrook College, Durrington Campus, the project was entered into the students curriculum for the 2025/26 school term as a live project.
From September 2025, the students started to make two seahorses, firstly a small one as a prototype, then the large one for display.
Working alongside the talented students, Bald Designs helped guide the design and development process, bringing the vision to life from concept through to construction. The finished seahorse will showcase the students’ skills while highlighting Worthing’s rich coastal heritage and marine environment.
We are now inviting local businesses to become part of the next exciting stage of this project, as we develop it into a town-wide Seahorse Trail. The vision is to create a herd of uniquely designed seahorses, that will form an art, tourism and environmental trail stretching along Worthing’s coastline and through its shopping districts.
By sponsoring the seahorse trail, businesses will have the opportunity to support a unique community initiative that celebrates creativity, promotes environmental awareness, and helps attract visitors to the town.
We have connected with Sussex Kelp Recovery Project and Sussex Wildlife Trust to help showcase their work and inspire others to take action for our marine life and nature.
